CATARINO GARZA DEAD

The News as Previously Published is Correct. Account of the Cowardly Attack by His Band and Further Details.

A dispatch reporting the death of the Mexican revolutionary and border raider Catarino Garza during a bloody rebel assault on a Panamanian coastal town — a violent, half-forgotten postscript to a man whose earlier border war against Porfirio Díaz once drew U.S. Army attention.

Colon, Colombia, March 22.

The following are the details of the attack recently made upon Bocas Del Toro, during which the notorious Mexican bandit Garza was killed: About 4 o'clock Friday morning, March 8, a party of rebels from Nicaragua made a desperate attack upon Bocas Del Toro.

The rebels were armed with Winchesters and reached Bocas Del Toro on the schooner Favor De Dios. The attacking party consisted of 50 men under the leadership of Catarino Garza, Pereira Castro and Safanor Mora, a lawyer.

After landing under cover of darkness the rebels captured the policemen and liberated all the prisoners in the calaboose.

The rebels then proceeded up the street and opened fire upon the quarters, where the government soldiers were located. The soldiers were taken by surprise and some of them were killed, while still in their bunks, by bullets which passed through the wooden walls of the building. But when aroused, the soldiers fought gallantly. Their lieutenant was killed.

The firing brought out a number of citizens to the assistance of the troops. During the fight ten rebels were killed, fifteen wounded and twenty-three taken prisoners. On the government side four were killed and nine wounded.

Among the rebels killed were Garza and Castro.

As soon as the invaders saw these men fall they retreated to the outskirts of the town and disappeared in the brush. During the encounter an attempt was made to set fire to the town by Castro, but he was shot in the act.

Several women were killed. Miss Nellie Isaacs, a government school mistress, is reported as among the slain. The government officials, after the engagement, captured the schooner Favor De Dios, and found on board eighty rifles and twenty thousand cartridges, and blankets, clothing and rations for the rebels.
