About

NewsPipe™ is a single, digital edition-style publication that resurrects old, lost stories from archives around the world, going back to the earliest printed records, and presents them in a modern and accessible format. Each new edition is a collage of these “lost stories,” extracted from the original sources with precision and fidelity, bringing forth not only the facts of what happened, but the colloquial language they were presented with. Read for enjoyment, study, inspiration, or simply to enlarge your own understanding of the events deemed newsworthy at a specific time and place to help get a broader view of the lives and incidents that have escaped the otherwise well-documented and prevailing narratives of modern world history. NewsPipe is for anyone and everyone. The only prerequisite is curiosity.

What is changed, and what is not

  • Repaired: scanning errors, broken words, lost line breaks, garbled characters.
  • Left alone: wording, sentence structure, period spelling and punctuation, the writer's voice — including language a modern paper would not print.
  • Added, and labelled as ours: a one- or two-sentence summary at the top of each story, written in plain modern English. It is the only text on the page in our voice.
  • Never done: filling a gap with invented text. Unrecoverable passages are marked in place.

How the front page is chosen

Each week the site publishes a fresh edition from its private archive. Selection prefers stories that have not run recently and that fit what readers have rated highly. If there is bias, it is only for the less remembered over the well-covered.
