1 min readWhile some workmen were demolishing some old houses belonging to Justice Phillimore in High street, Kensington, one of them discovered an earthenware teapot filled with discs of yellowish metal. He put several of them in his pocket and took them to a jeweler, who declared that they were spade guineas. He hurried back for the remainder, but the teapot had been put in a load of rubbish and carted away to a rubbish heap in Bagley's lane, Fulham. Several of the guineas, however, had fallen out of the teapot and were lying about on the ground, and these were eagerly seized by the other workmen and sold for their weight in gold to the local jewelers. Scotland Yard has forbidden pawnbrokers and jewelers to deal in the coins. By an old statute all golden treasure trove is the property of the state.—London Express.
