The Holy Father completed his 80th year last Monday, and a large concourse of people went to the Vatican to offer him their congratulations. On the same day M. d'Harcourt went in state to present his letters of recall. He had a long audience with the Holy Father, and after it was over presented the attaches and persons composing his suite. On the following day M. de Gontaut-Biron, the new French Ambassador, presented his credentials.
The tone of the Catholic papers with regard to the 80th anniversary of the Pope's birth seems to have affected the revolutionary and official press very much, as they all, in consequence, made direct attacks upon the Holy Father. Certainly his age and health must be the source of immense irritation to them.
